Step 1 — Open the application

When a new application is submitted, you’ll receive a notification. Go to Projects — new applications appear at the top of the Created stage.

Step 2 — Move to Screening

Once you start your review, move the application to Screening. This signals to others that someone is actively reviewing it and prevents duplicated effort.

Step 3 — Read the full submission

Before using any assessment tools, read the entrepreneur’s submission in full without interruption. Form an initial view — does this feel like a business that is ready to pitch?

Step 4 — Generate coverage and review

You can generate an AI assessment of the submission at any point. Click Generate review on the Screening tab. AngelAI will:
  • Score the submission across the 8 screening dimensions
  • Produce a coverage map showing what has been addressed
  • Produce a lead review of the opportunity (Scale plan only)
All Assessors can generate the coverage map and dimension scores. The full AI-generated lead review is available on the Scale plan only. On Free and Pro plans, you see the scores and coverage but write the review yourself.

Step 5 — Work through the screening framework

Review the AI-generated scores and add your own notes for each of the 8 dimensions. See The screening framework for guidance on what to look for in each area.

Step 6 — Ask clarifying questions

Use the Q&A tool to ask the entrepreneur directly. Keep questions focused — one to three questions per round is usually appropriate.
Use AngelAI to help you frame questions. Ask it: “What questions should I ask an entrepreneur in [sector] about their go-to-market strategy?”

Step 7 — Make your decision

Move to Pitching — the application is sufficiently developed and the company is ready to present. You will be prompted to assign a Project Lead. Decline — click Decline in the project menu and record a brief reason. The entrepreneur is not automatically notified. Request more information — continue the Q&A process and leave the project in Screening until you have what you need.
